An ink delivery delay occurs when there is a noticeable lag between the printhead requesting ink and the ink actually arriving. This causes missing sections, banding, or faint colors, especially in high-speed or high-coverage prints. Fixing delays requires identifying flow restrictions anywhere from the tank to the printhead.

What an Ink Delivery Delay Looks Like

Unlike a complete blockage, delay symptoms are intermittent:

  • The first inch of a page prints perfectly, then fades.
  • Solid fill areas have horizontal banding.
  • Printing slows down significantly (printer pauses to let ink catch up).
  • You see “ghosting” where colors appear seconds after they should.

Clean the Ink Supply Tubes Internally

Over time, a thin film of dried ink forms on tube walls, narrowing the diameter and slowing flow.

Tube flushing procedure:

  1. Remove the ink tanks.
  2. Disconnect the supply tubes from the tank side.
  3. Attach a syringe filled with warm cleaning solution to each tube.
  4. Gently push solution through the tube toward the printhead.
  5. Watch the solution exit the printhead (place paper towels to catch drips).
  6. Repeat until solution flows freely without resistance.
  7. Reconnect tubes and refill tanks.

If resistance remains, replace the tube set entirely.

Check for Collapsed or Softened Tubing

Some silicone tubes soften or collapse over time, pinching internally.

  1. With the printer off, manually move the printhead side to side.
  2. Watch each tube as it bends around the carriage path.
  3. If any tube flattens or kinks at the bend point, it has fatigued.
  4. Replace that tube.

Temporary fix: Insert a small spring (like from a retractable pen) around the outside of the tube at the bend point to prevent collapse.

Increase Printhead Temperature (For Cold Environments)

Cold ink has higher viscosity and flows slower.

  1. Ensure room temperature is above 65°F (18°C).
  2. If cold, print 5-10 pages of blank text (printer warms up).
  3. Alternatively, run a nozzle check 3 times – the friction warms the printhead.
  4. For persistent cold, use a small space heater near (not aimed at) the printer.

Do not use a hair dryer – you’ll melt internal components.

Use the Epson Adjustment Program to Increase Ink Flow Rate

The Adjustment Program can adjust the timing parameters for ink delivery.

  1. Launch the program.
  2. Navigate to “Printer Settings” > “Ink Delivery Timing.”
  3. Increase “Ink Charge Time” from default (e.g., 50ms to 100ms).
  4. Also adjust “Pump Pulse Width” to a higher value.
  5. Save and test print.

These changes tell the printer to allow more time for ink to reach the printhead.

Replace the Ink Damper (Printhead Component)

The damper absorbs pressure spikes but also acts as a flow regulator. A clogged damper restricts ink delivery.

  1. Remove the printhead (service manual required).
  2. Pop off the plastic damper cover.
  3. Lift out each silicone damper.
  4. Inspect the mesh filter on the damper’s bottom – if clogged, replace the damper.
  5. You can temporarily soak the damper in cleaning solution overnight to dissolve clogs.

Dampers are inexpensive ($5-10 each) and worth replacing yearly in heavy-use printers.

Check for Air Leaks in the Supply Path

A tiny air leak introduces micro-bubbles that delay ink delivery.

Leak test:

  1. Turn off printer.
  2. Place a drop of soapy water on each tube connection.
  3. Run a cleaning cycle – bubbles at any connection indicate a leak.
  4. Tighten or replace the fitting.

Also check for cracks in the tank’s outlet port – these are not repairable and require tank replacement.

Adjust the Print Speed to Match Ink Delivery

If your print settings are too fast for the ink system, delays occur.

  1. In your print dialog, go to Printer Properties > Advanced.
  2. Change Print Quality from “Fast” or “Speed” to “Standard” or “Quality.”
  3. Enable “High Speed Printing” (counterintuitively, turning it off may help).
  4. For Epson printers, disable “Bi-directional Printing.”

Slower print speeds give ink more time to flow.

Replace the Ink Pump (For Ongoing Delay Issues)

If ink delivery is consistently slow across all colors, the pump is likely weak.

Pump failure signs:

  • Very little ink moves during cleaning cycles.
  • Printhead never fully primes.
  • All colors are affected equally.

Replacement requires disassembling the printer’s ink system – consider professional repair.

Prevent Future Ink Delivery Delays

  • Use the printer weekly to keep ink moving.
  • Store ink at room temperature.
  • Run a power cleaning every 3 months to clear slow buildup.
  • Never let the printer sit unused for more than 30 days.

By removing flow restrictions and adjusting timing, your Epson printer will deliver ink as fast as the printhead demands it.
