A frozen scan preview occurs when the prescan or preview window in your scanning software stops responding. You click the “Preview” button, the scanner makes noise, but no image appears, or the software becomes unresponsive. Preview freezing can be caused by driver conflicts, connection issues, or scanner hardware problems.

Understanding the Preview Process

The preview (or prescan) is a low-resolution, fast scan that shows you what the scanner sees. The scanner carriage moves, the software receives image data, and the preview window displays the result. Preview freezing means the software did not receive the data, received corrupt data, or the scanner failed to complete the preview scan.

Quick Preview Fixes

Wait 60 Seconds Before Retrying

Sometimes the preview is not frozen but is very slow. If you are scanning at high resolution (even for preview), the scanner may take 30-60 seconds. Wait a full minute. If the preview appears, the issue was impatience, not freezing. Reduce preview resolution in settings.

Cancel and Restart Preview

Click Cancel in the preview dialog (if responsive). If the software is completely frozen, force close it using Task Manager (Windows) or Force Quit (Mac). Restart the scan software. Attempt a new preview. Temporary software glitches often clear with a restart.

Scan Without Preview

If preview consistently freezes but you know the approximate scan area, bypass preview entirely. In Epson Scan, uncheck Show Preview (or click directly to Scan). Set the scan area manually using coordinates or by selecting a paper size. The scan proceeds without a preview step.

Connection and Driver Solutions

Scan Over USB Instead of Network

Network interruptions are a common cause of preview freezing. Connect your Epson printer directly to your computer via USB. Test preview over USB. If preview works, the issue is network-related. Troubleshoot Wi-Fi or use USB for scanning.

Update or Reinstall Scanner Driver

A corrupt scanner driver can freeze during preview data transfer. Uninstall your current scanner driver. Restart your computer. Download the latest full driver package from Epson. Install with the printer connected via USB. After installation, test preview.

Disable Other Scanning Software

Multiple scanning applications trying to access the scanner simultaneously can cause preview freezes. Close Windows Scan, Adobe Scan, or any other scanning utilities. Also close any image editing software that may be holding the scanner connection. Restart your computer to clear all connections.

Software-Specific Solutions

Clear Epson Scan Temporary Files

Corrupt temporary files can freeze preview. Close Epson Scan. On Windows, press Windows + R, type %temp%, and press Enter. Delete all files in this folder (skip files in use). On Mac, restart to clear temp files. Reopen Epson Scan. Test preview.

Reset Epson Scan Preferences

Corrupt preference files can cause freezing. On Windows, delete the Epson Scan registry key (as shown in a previous article). On Mac, delete com.epson.scanner.plist from ~/Library/Preferences. Restart Epson Scan. The software recreates clean preferences.

Use Epson Scan 2 Instead of Epson Scan

If your printer supports Epson Scan 2, switch to this newer application. It has improved stability and fewer preview freeze issues. Download from the Epson website. Uninstall old Epson Scan first. Install Epson Scan 2. Test preview.

Computer Performance Solutions

Close Resource-Intensive Applications

Preview scanning requires system resources. Close web browsers with many tabs, video players, and large image files. Ensure you have sufficient RAM (at least 2GB free). On older computers, restart before scanning.

Update Graphics Drivers

The preview window uses your computer’s graphics system. Outdated graphics drivers can cause rendering freezes. Update your graphics driver from the manufacturer’s website (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel). Restart your computer. Test preview.

Disable Graphics Hardware Acceleration in Scan Software

Some scan software attempts to use GPU acceleration, which can cause freezes. In Epson Scan, look for Use Hardware Acceleration or GPU Rendering in advanced settings. Disable this option. Restart the software. Preview may be slower but should not freeze.

Printer Hardware Solutions

Perform a Scanner Transport Lock Check

If the scanner’s transport lock is partially engaged, the carriage may move slowly or freeze during preview. Locate the lock switch (usually on the bottom or back). Ensure it is fully in the “Unlock” position (padlock open). A partially locked scanner produces intermittent freezing.

Clean Scanner Carriage Rails

Dust or dried lubricant on the carriage rails can cause the scan head to stick during preview movement. Turn off and unplug the printer. Open the scanner lid. Locate the metal rail(s) under the glass. Apply a tiny amount of silicone lubricant to the rails. Manually move the scan head back and forth to distribute. This reduces sticking.

Reset Scanner Controller Using Adjustment Program

Freezing may be caused by a stuck scanner controller state. Download an Epson adjustment program. Look for Scan Controller Reset or Scanner Initialization. Run the reset. Power cycle the printer. Test preview.

Advanced Preview Fixes

Reduce Preview Resolution

If your scan software allows preview resolution settings, reduce it. Preview at 150 dpi instead of 300 dpi. Smaller data transfers are less likely to freeze. After confirming the preview works, you can set final scan resolution higher.

Use “Thumbnail” Mode Instead of Full Preview

Epson Scan’s “Thumbnail” mode scans only small thumbnails of detected documents, not the full flatbed. Switch from Normal to Thumbnail view. This faster preview is less prone to freezing. Select your document from thumbnails, then scan normally.

When Preview Freezing Indicates Hardware Failure

If you have tried USB connection, fresh drivers, closed other applications, cleaned rails, used adjustment program resets, and preview still freezes consistently, the scanner’s sensor array or controller board may be failing. The scanner may respond to scan commands but cannot transmit continuous data for preview. Test on a different computer. If preview freezes on multiple computers, the scanner hardware is likely defective. Contact Epson customer support. For out-of-warranty printers, replacement is usually recommended over repair.
